Protean Micro/Macrocosm

This body of work explores ideas within the relationship between Mysticism and Science through protean symbolism. The mythical figure Proteus, (the shape-shifting sea-god and prophet encountered by Homer in the Odyssey), personifies the constantly changing nature of the sea. This fluxist concept of constant change and mutation reflects the idea of organic growth and fluidity, as well as the intrinsic connection between all living things, as the amebic aesthetic of fluidity and growth connects each piece to this central concept of protean flux.
Carl Jung believed Proteus to be the personification of the elusive and fluid depth of the unconscious mind. This correlates with my fascination of the ephemeral, ever-evolving harmony and beauty in the visual and symbolic similarities between amoeba and nebula. While the microorganism can embody the beginning of life in it’s earliest stage and most basic structural form, a galactic body speaks to the metaphysical. So too can the metaphysical speak to the enigmatic and transcendental elements of the mind and universal life force. This relationship between Science and Mysticism reflects my inner struggle between my conviction in reason and logic and my despondent yearning for spiritual assurance.
